As part of the annual Gateway Korea Foundation’s DanO Festival, Hyonjeong “HJ” Kim Han will speak about Minhwa (민화, 民畵)—Korean folk painting. Han is the Joseph de Heer Curator of Arts of Asia at the Denver Art Museum.
Beginning with an exploration of the term Minhwa, including its origin and meaning in the Joseon dynasty (1392–1910), this lecture delves into the history, context, and diverse themes and motifs of Korean folk painting, also known as Korean people’s painting. Beyond their aesthetic appeal, Minhwa artworks embody the heartfelt aspirations of both their creators and collectors, reflecting wishes for better lives, fortune, and good luck. This lecture also examines the enduring tradition of Minhwa and its recent surge in popularity in Korea.
