Celebrate the anniversary of the first Impressionist exhibition with Simon Kelly, curator of modern and contemporary art.
Step into Paris 1874, where a group of visionary artists dared to defy the conventions of the art world, sparking a movement that would forever change how we see the world. Discover with Simon the radical innovation of the first Impressionist exhibition through the bold works of Claude Monet, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Berthe Morisot, Edgar Degas, and Paul Cézanne. Explore the electrifying contrast between these avant-garde masterpieces and the more traditional works exhibited at the Paris Salon that same year.
Spotlighting exceptional pieces from our museum's collection, this lecture will unveil our latest acquisition, Émile Bayard’s The Siege of Paris, an evocative work exhibited at the 1874 Salon. View the Impressionist collection and The Siege of Paris in galleries 217 and 218 after the lecture.
