MORE ABOUT SAINT LOUIS BALLET
Saint Louis Ballet is the region’s major professional ballet company. Under the direction of former New York City Ballet principal dancer Gen Horiuchi, its 26 classically trained dancers are selected in a competitive national audition and come to St. Louis from training programs and ballet companies throughout the world. The company’s repertoire includes full-length ballets such as Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, Don Quixote, Coppelia, Romeo & Juliet and Giselle as well as contemporary work from renowned choreographers such as George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, Justin Peck, Gerald Arpino, Christopher d’Amboise, Brian Enos, Amy Seiwert, Jessica Lang, Twyla Tharp, Tom Gold, Emery LeCrone, Nilas Martins, and Peter Martins. In addition to a season of fully mounted productions, Saint Louis Ballet operates a ballet school, professional training program, and conducts an outreach program, Pointe to Succeed, to bring underserved students to live performances.
ABOUT THE DIRECTOR
Gen Horiuchi, originally from Tokyo, Japan, moved to the United States after winning the Prix de Lausanne, the international ballet competition in Switzerland in 1980, and receiving a scholarship to study at the School of American Ballet. In 1982, the great George Balanchine invited him to join the New York City Ballet, where he became a principal dancer in 1989. He performed many ballets with the renowned company; Balanchine created the role of Mercury in the ballet Perséphone especially for him. Peter Martins, ballet master-in-chief, created ballets Eight More and Les Gentilhommes for Horiuchi as well.
Gen Horiuchi’s Broadway musical credits include Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Song and Dance and the role of Mr. Mistoffelees in Cats. He went on to perform that role in London’s production of Cats and became the first performer to play the lead on both Broadway and in the West End in 1998. That same year, he choreographed the magnificent Opening Ceremony of the Winter Olympics in Nagano, Japan.
Horiuchi became Executive and Artistic Director of Saint Louis Ballet in 2000 and created more than 20 original works including seven full-length ballets for the company.
In 2010, he founded “Ballet for the Future” which tours Japan’s major cities each summer with a company of professional ballet dancers. In 2016, the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology awarded Horiuchi the prestigious Art Encouragement Prize in recognition of his work with “Ballet for the Future.”

TAKE 5...MORE OR LESS
Jazzy, upbeat fusion of music, dance and Matisse-inspired costumes and lighting from acclaimed Broadway director and choreographer Susan Stroman. With Paul Desmond/Dave Brubeck classics that are playful and addictive.
"The Four Temperaments"
A Saint Louis premiere by George Balanchine that is at once classically grounded and utterly modern. With solo piano and string orchestra from the Chamber Music Society of Saint Louis.
"Divertimento No. 15"
George Balanchine's only ballet set to a Mozart score, Divertimento No. 15 is a ballet lover's dream. Gorgeous costumes, ingenious choreography, technical prowess and glorious music performed live by the Chamber Music Society of Saint Louis.
February 14-15, 2026
CALL IT LOVE!
"Saint Louis Blues"
Choreographed by Gen Horiuchi, this dynamic ballet set to W.C. Handy's soulful rhythms returns by popular demand. Fresh from a successful Tokyo run, it features live jazz by New York-based composer Toya and stunning vocal by a Special Guest!
“Hallelujah Junction”
Peter Martins’ Hallelujah Junction is set to a score of the same name by John Adams. The music was written for two pianos, and named after a small truck stop near the California-Nevada border. Adams said of the piece, “It was a case of a good title needing a piece, so I obliged by composing this work for two pianos.” The work centers on delayed repetition between the two pianos, creating an effect of echoing sonorities. There is a constant shift of pulse and meter, but the main rhythms are based on the rhythms of the word “Hal-le-LU-jah.”
“Chairman Dances”
Choreographed by Peter Martins, The Chairman Dances blends the vocabulary of classical dance with traditional Chinese lyrical gestures and pageantry, enhancing the repetitive minimalism of John Adams's score with bold, colorful staging.
"Liturgy"
Choreographed by Tony Winner Christopher Wheeldon (Carousel) in 2003 for New York City Ballet, this pas de deux has a mystical quality as the male and female dancers separate and return to one another with increasing intensity. This piece is physically demanding with difficult and intriguing partnering that can take the audience on a journey both spiritual and profound.
April 24-26
